The cold wave and the heavy snowfalls that in recent days have covered a large part of Turkey in white, are making their effects being felt especially in eastern Turkey. Temperatures of minus 39.2 degrees have been recorded in eastern Van province, causing vehicle fuel tanks to freeze. Van holds the record for the lowest temperature ever measured in Turkey: -46.4 °C was recorded on January 9, 1990 in the Çaldıran district, near the border with Iran.
