The feared marine mucilage or “sea snot“, a viscous substance resulting from pollution of the sea that suffocates marine life, has reappeared on the shores of Istanbul, in the Asian district of Maltepe. The image raises fears of its reappearance this summer, just as scientists warned last year, when this substance made up of decomposing organic matter covered the coasts of the country’s northwest, forcing the Turkish government to launch the largest mobilisation to clean up the sea of Turkish history.
