Thousands of teachers walked out in protest in Turkey’s main cities during a day of strike action called by teaching unions and associations in protest at growing violence against teachers, especially after the recent murder of an Istanbul school principal by a student who had been expelled from the school.
A large number of teachers decided to go on strike and not attend classes, leaving unusual scenes of empty classrooms across the country, as the majority of students also decided not to attend classes in response to the strike.
During the protests, teachers called for new security measures in Turkish schools and colleges, as well as harsher penalties for crimes and offences committed against teachers. Turkey’s National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has called on teachers to return to normal classes, saying his ministry plans to submit a bill to parliament to increase convictions and penalties for classroom violence against teachers by 50%.
