2023 was a tragic year for Turkish roads, according to the latest accident report published by the Traffic Directorate of the General Safety Agency of Turkey, which states that 2,984 people were killed in road accidents last year, while 354,234 others were injured.
By provinces, Istanbul (the country’s most populous province) had the most accidents involving injuries or deaths (25,614 accidents), followed by the capital Ankara (15,344), which also saw a significant increase in the number of people killed in accidents; Izmir (13,468) and Antalya (12,041) came third and fourth respectively, while the province with the fewest accidents was Ardahan, with only 175 in 2023.
In terms of causes, of the 555,668 traffic accidents in Turkey in 2023, almost half (249,776) were due to driver mistakes. The main cause – in 92,523 of the cases – was driving too fast for the road, traffic and weather conditions; the second cause – behind 37,845 accidents caused by drivers – was negligence in yielding the right of way or priority while respecting the road signs. Other causes were inappropriate lane changes and turns (22,807), collisions in reversing manoeuvres (22,082) and inappropriate manoeuvres or changes of direction (29,514).
