The catastrophic floods that Pakistan has suffered after unusually strong monsoons have already left nearly 1,200 dead, according to the latest count of victims. A third of the country is submerged under water, and more than half a million people have become refugees and do not have access to food, clean water or medicine. The unprecedented floods have affected more than 33 million people, destroying one million hectares of crops and killing 730,000 head of livestock. The water has also caused damage to a million homes and more than 5,000 kilometres of roads. Turkey is one of the countries that is sending the most aid to the country, but the Islamabad government has asked the world not to leave Pakistan – already facing a serious economic crisis – at the mercy of the consequences of climate change.
