Today marks the 3rd anniversary of the terrible explosion that devastated much of the city of Beirut on August 4, 2020, caused by a fire in a huge silo storing ammonium nitrate in the city’s port. Considered one of the largest non-atomic explosions in history, the immense explosion ripped through the city center causing $5 billion worth of damage, killing more than 200 people and injuring some 4,000, and leaving more than 300,000 people homeless.
Since then and despite international aid, efforts to rebuild many of the critical infrastructures destroyed by the big explosion have been slowed down by the serious financial crisis that Lebanon has been going through for years, also halting negotiations with the World Bank to finance the reconstruction of the devastated port of Beirut, key to the Lebanese economy.
