Coinciding with the Friday prayer in the neighbouring Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia lived its last Friday yesterday before being reopened on July 24 as a mosque (a function it held from 1453 to 1931), after a recent ruling by the State Council determined that its transformation into a museum in 1934 was illegal. Next Friday we will know what changes will be made in Hagia Sophia, including how Christian religious images will be hidden during the Muslim prayer.
