The waters of the Bosphorus Strait, which splits Istanbul into two separating Europe from Asia, have been dyed turquoise since the weekend coinciding with the end of Ramadan. Experts attribute this color change to an environmental phenomenon, caused by a combination of marine and meteorological factors and by the proliferation of a type of phytoplankton (single-celled organisms that perform photosynthesis) from the Black Sea.
