Israel is preparing for ‘a possible ground operation’ against the strongholds of the Shiite group Hezbollah in Lebanon, where the number of displaced civilians fleeing the southern regions bombed by the Israeli army now exceeds 500,000 amid the dangerous escalation of war in the Middle East.
The information, quoted by the Turkish news agency Anatolia, comes from the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) itself, which published on its website a meeting held yesterday between Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and a group of soldiers who are training for a possible scenario of a ground operation inside Lebanon.
‘Israel is preparing for a possible ground operation in Lebanon as preparations continue,’ KAN said. In another post shared on social media, the Israeli public broadcaster showed Major General Uri Gordin, commander of the IDF’s Northern Command, during a visit yesterday to the commanders and fighters of the 7th Brigade on the northern border.
According to a KAN reporter, during his visit Gordin checked the state of readiness of his forces and assessed with them the operational situation in the region, commenting: ‘We have entered another phase of the campaign (in Lebanon), we must be very well prepared to enter into manoeuvres and actions’. The term ‘manoeuvres’ is commonly used by the Israeli military to refer to ground operations.
Israel’s aerial bombing campaign launched on Monday over southern Lebanon has already killed at least 570 people and wounded more than 1,800, according to Lebanese health ministry sources, while Hezbollah continues to fire rockets into Israeli territory: this morning, dozens of rockets were launched from southern Lebanon, including a long-range rocket that reached the vicinity of Tel Aviv and was intercepted without causing injuries. Turkey has warned that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon threaten to ‘drag the whole region into chaos’, and accuses Netanyahu of escalating the conflict for his own political survival.
