Turkish Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ has announced the opening of an investigation and the arrest of several people after the attack with stones suffered by the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, during an electoral rally of his CHP party in the city of Erzurum, in the east of the country, which left several people injured and forced İmamoğlu to be hastily evacuated by his security team.
Upon his return to Istanbul, İmamoğlu claimed that the attackers were a group of “maximum 300 or 400 people” who were “instigated”, accusing the police of doing nothing: statements to which Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has replied accusing the mayor of “being the one who generated the provocation.” Both the spokesman for the Turkish president and the spokesman for Erdoğan’s AKP party, however, have described as “unacceptable” an attack that undermines “political freedom”, condemning “any form of violence against politics“.
For his part, the governor of Erzurum, Okay Memiş, reported yesterday that 7 people were slightly injured by the stone attack, adding that the square where the mayor of Istanbul bus stopped had not been announced as a place to hold a rally. “Otherwise, we could have taken many more security measures to secure the area,” the governor explained.
