Galatasaray prevailed in Sunday’s classic Istanbul derby at Beşiktaş’s Tüpraş Stadium in the 28th round of the Turkish Super League, picking up three precious points to keep top of the table for another week, after Fenerbahçe‘s comfortable away win over Hatayspor on Saturday.
The eagerly awaited derby, however, turned out to be a rather boring affair in which the Lions did not have to play their best game to win a match that – things of the Turkish football – was settled by a single goal scored not by the Okan Buruk-led side, but by the Beşiktaş Libyan midfielder Mohamed Al-Musrati, who clumsily attempted to clear a ball centred into the goal box from a corner kick, and instead beat his own goalkeeper and team-mate, Mert Günok.
There was little else to report in a derby with few real chances to score and in which Beşiktaş ended up playing the last few minutes with a player less, after Omar Colley was sent off shortly before injury time for a brutal tackle on Barış that was ruled with a straight red car by the VAR. Galatasaray secured its first win at Beşiktaş Stadium since the 2014-2015 season, and remains leader of the league for another week, two points behind Fenerbahçe.
