ferry accident in Eminönü, Istanbul

Ferry crash into Istanbul pier recorded on video

A ferry on the route from Harem to Sirkeci crashed this morning into another boat and then into a pier in the popular Eminönü district of central Istanbul, in an accident that caused concern among passengers on board the vessel and those waiting on the shore: a moment that was caught on camera by several witnesses.

Turkish media reported that the incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. local time (10:00 CET) at the Sirkeci ferry dock, located at the junction of Ankara Street and Kennedy Avenue. According to the latest information, a ferry travelling from Harem (in the Asian district of Üsküdar) lost control due to a rudder failure just as it was approaching its destination in Sirkeci.

The ship then collided sideways with another ferry berthed at the dock, and then rammed head-on into the pier itself, while repeatedly sounding its warning siren. Numerous passengers who were on deck at the time, together with the vehicles being transported by the ferry, witnessed the collision, which unleashed moments of great concern among both passengers and people waiting on the shore at the time.

After the accident, police, firemen and ambulances were dispatched to the Eminönü district of Istanbul, where, despite the collision, no injuries or serious material damage were reported. The moment when the ferry crashed into the Sirkeci quay was recorded by numerous witnesses on their mobile phones.
