Fenerbahçe imposed its authority in yesterday afternoon’s 14th round of the Turkish league, easily beating Gaziantep during the southeastern Turkish team’s visit to Istanbul, thanks to a fine performance from Brazilian defender Rodrigo Becão.
In a thrilling encounter at the Şükrü Saraçoğlu stadium, the first goal of the match came barely two minutes into the game, when Oğuz Aydın received a stolen ball and slipped it between the legs of Sokratis Dioudis – Gaziantep’s Greek goalkeeper – to make it 1-0. Just 5 minutes later, En-Nesyri had a golden chance when he was left alone in front of Dioudis, but his shot went inches wide.
The Gaziantep team tried to equalise, but the Yellow Canaries clearly had the upper hand. It was in one such attempt that Okereke received a ball in the six-yard box which he controlled with his chest, and the Nigerian scored a curious goal after a last-ditch save from Livaković.
With the game tied, the players went to the dressing room. But the scoreline did not reflect the game on the pitch and Mourinho‘s side needed to prove their dominance on the pitch, also on the scoreboard. In the 56th minute, Saint-Maximin claimed the ball when alone on the left flank and fired a stunning shot against the crossbar that Dioudis – undoubtedly the star of his team during this match – saved with a sky-high save.
Rodrigo Becão’s goal that gave Mourinho’s side some oxygen
It was not until the 77th minute that Rodrigo Becão appeared to make his 6ft 4in height count with a great header from a corner to put Fener back in front. The Brazilian defender actually played a great role throughout the match, stopping the opposition’s attacking moves and proving that, at 28 years of age, he can play a big role in this team.
In the final moments of the match, Edin Džeko received a magnificent pass from Saint-Maximin from almost midfield which he collected on the edge of the six-yard box, and without letting the ball bounce, he shot a right-footed shot into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1.
With this result, Fenerbahçe took three key points to maintain the chase with Galatasaray, who after only managing a draw against Eyüpspor is only three points ahead of Fener. However, the Canaries have a difficult game next weekend away from home in the derby against Beşiktaş, who is in the midst of a crisis but could still make things difficult for José Mourinho’s men.
