Erdoğan accused Europe of having turned a deaf ear to requests for help from Turkey; but now that it has opened the doors to refugees, he says that European leaders don’t stop calling him.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that Turkey will no longer restrain refugees who want to enter Europe, while having harsh criticism for European countries for systematically ignoring Ankara’s requests for help to stop the Assad regime and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Syria.
While Europe has remained silent until now and has turned a deaf ear to Turkey’s requests, the Turkish president said he has not stopped receiving calls from European leaders after on Friday the Turkish government announced that it would no longer stop in the borders to refugees and migrants who want to go to European Union countries.
“Turkey will never close its doors again to refugees crossing into Europe, that is something that is already done,” said Erdoğan, adding that now European countries will also take their share of the burden in the Syrian refugee crisis.
Reiterating once again Turkey’s willingness to continue its offensive against Assad in Syria to avoid a humanitarian disaster in the Syrian province of Idlib, Erdoğan also took the opportunity to confirm that he is scheduled to meet next Thursday in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the tense situation in the region and the problem of refugees. “I hope we can deal a ceasefire and take other steps,” he concluded.
