During the Conference on Disarmament held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, warned of the unprecedented deterioration of the international peace and security system, stressing that the increase in armed conflicts and tensions accumulated in recent years pose a serious risk to global stability: “Either we eliminate nuclear weapons, or one day they will eliminate us. If we work together, we can achieve a world free of nuclear weapons,” he said.
Araghchi pointed out that the erosion of multilateralism, the imposition of illegal unilateral coercive measures, and the renewed use of nuclear weapons as a political tool have created an extremely unstable global environment. In this context, the Iranian foreign minister stressed the need for urgent collective action, not hesitating to point to atomic weapons as “the greatest verifiable and irreversible threat to humanity,” according to words quoted by Turkish media outlets.
The head of Iranian diplomacy stressed that reliance on nuclear weapons is gaining weight in the security doctrines of some countries and recalled that humanity lives under the shadow of more than 12,000 nuclear warheads, most of which are deployed or on high alert. “Iran has consistently stated that it does not intend to produce or acquire nuclear weapons, nor do they have a place in Iran’s national security doctrine. This position is rooted in our defense policy and is supported by clear religious limits (fatwas) that prohibit the use of weapons of mass destruction,” Araghchi insisted.
The Iranian representative said his country has demonstrated its commitment to diplomacy and good faith, but argued that the actions of some Western countries, especially the United States, have seriously damaged the credibility of the negotiating process over its controversial nuclear program. In this regard, he again denounced the U.S. military attack against Iran carried out in June 2025.
The West ignores the threat to world peace posed by Israel
“That aggression completely contradicts the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law,” said Araghchi, who accused Washington and several European countries of presenting Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme as a threat, while ignoring “the threats posed by the Israeli regime to world peace and security,” including Israel’s nuclear arsenal, he warned.
“Israel has attacked seven countries in the region in less than two years. It has massacred more than 70,000 people in Gaza as part of its colonial genocide. There is no crime it has not committed and no red line it has not crossed,“ Araqchi insisted, while issuing a warning against a new US attack: ”Iran is fully prepared to defend itself against any threat or act of aggression. The consequences of any attack on Iran will not be limited to its borders.”
Finally, Iran’s foreign minister warned that nuclear threats and double standards applied by powers such as the United States are weakening the foundations of international law: “The choice before us is clear: either we eliminate nuclear weapons, or one day they will eliminate us. But if we work together, we can achieve a world free of nuclear weapons,” he said.
