The death toll from the 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes that devastated southeastern Turkey on February 6 now stands at 45,089 people, according to the latest data released by the AFAD emergency agency, which points out that since then there have been more than 11,000 aftershocks in the region. Turkish authorities confirmed yesterday that more than 200,000 buildings have been destroyed or seriously damaged, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to be housed in shelters and makeshift accommodation. AFAD informed yesterday that it has so far installed 356,419 emergency tents and 8,530 container houses in the 11 provinces affected by the earthquake; after visiting the affected area yesterday, the WHO director described the scale of destruction caused by the earthquakes in Turkey as “really massive in modern history.”
