After an intensive 19-day search, the body of Halit Yukay, a Turkish businessman who went missing on 4 August while sailing his yacht in the Sea of Marmara, was found during the weekend at a depth of 68 metres, ending the mystery of his disappearance, for which the captain of a cargo ship has been arrested.
According to BBC Türkçe, the body of Yukay – who had set off on 4 August in his yacht from the coast of Yalova for the Turkish island of Bozcaada- was found at 7 p.m. on Saturday 23 August at a depth of 68 metres using sonar technology and underwater robots, in the area where the shipwreck of his vessel was identified as having occurred.
The 43-year-old businessman’s family had reported him missing after failing to contact him shortly after he set sail on his yacht, from which semi-submerged wreckage was found the following day, on 5 August, off the coast of Marmara Island in the western Sea of Marmara. An examination of the wreckage confirmed that it matched the serial number of the boat Yukay was operating when he disappeared, but his body was not found at the time.
The subsequent investigation determined that a large bulk carrier sailing in the Sea of Marmara collided with the yacht; images taken from the bow of the vessel showing impact marks confirmed this hypothesis, and the captain of the vessel – identified by the initials C.T., who was initially arrested and later released under judicial supervision – was finally sent to prison for causing the death of the Turkish businessman.
In his testimony in court, the captain admitted that he felt a jolt when he was sailing off Marmara Island but said he did not think it was a collision and continued on his route as normal. During the search operation, the famous Turkish actor Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ – a personal friend of the businessman – asked people for help in an attempt to find Yukay, hoping that he was still alive.
