At least 12 people were injured, 3 of them seriously, after the huge explosion that occurred on Monday afternoon in the port of Derince, in the province of Kocaeli (about 100 km east of Istanbul). The incident, whose causes are still being investigated (according to some reports, it could have occurred when wheat was being transferred from a ship to one of the silos), occurred around 2:40 p.m. local time (1:40 p.m. CET) in a grain depot; the power of the explosion was such that it shook all the buildings in the city of İzmit, located about 10 kilometers away, with numerous witnesses filming the huge column of smoke, which reached several hundred meters in height.
