The İzmir Wildlife Nature Park, a zoo in western Turkey, has welcomed the birth in captivity of a baby Asian elephant, to whom Begümcan, a 25-year-old female elephant, gave birth after 2 years of gestation. Begümcan has two other calves with Winner, her mate. The Asian elephant is a threatened species in its natural habitat, so this birth has been doubly celebrated for its importance for the preservation of these elephants. Built on an area of 4,125 square metres, the İzmir Wildlife Nature Park is home to some 3,000 animals of 134 species from all over the world.
