A horrific collision between a small bus carrying a group of passengers and a truck left at least eight people dead and 11 injured in the province of Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey, local media reported.
The accident occurred when the minibus, which was heading towards Hatay province, collided head-on with a concrete mixer truck travelling in the opposite lane near the İslahiye district; the impact completely destroyed the minibus, which was left lying on its side on the side of the road. Witnesses to the crash immediately called the emergency services, who were able to establish that eight of the passengers on the bus had died on the spot.
Eleven other people with various injuries were transported to hospitals in the area, according to the Turkish authorities. Although the exact cause of the accident is not known at this stage, pending the completion of the investigation, initial indications suggest that the truck, whose driver has been arrested, lost control due to speeding and crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding with the bus.
