Fenerbahçe throws away its title aspirations

Fenerbahçe threw away their Turkish league title aspirations last night as they only got a draw before lowly Konyaspor in the final match of the 35th round of the Turkish Super League, allowing Galatasaray to increase their lead to 6 points with just 3 rounds to go this season.

The Yellow Canaries needed a win to stay in the title race with Galata, especially after a draw a fortnight ago in Sivas allowed the Lions to take a four-point lead. But the match, which was supposed to be an easy one against an opponent at the bottom of the standings, turned out to be difficult for the team coached by İsmail Kartal, who clearly dominated possession and tried everything they could to score… without success.

Faced with this pressure, Konyaspor opted to close at the back, with the defence and especially their Polish goalkeeper – Słowik – repelling Fener’s attacks and trying to break out on counter attacks when they had the chance. It was precisely in one of these outlets, just seconds before the 90 minutes were up, that Konyaspor managed to score through Ndao a goal that left Fenerbahçe totally in shock, faced with the worst possible scenario.

In the end, thanks to VAR, the goal was disallowed in extremis, but the draw in Konya still leaves Fenerbahçe – who is now six points behind the leader – with only nine points left to play for in the Süper Lig: a very complicated scenario for Fenerbahçe, who practically needs a miracle to prevent Galatasaray from repeating as league champions.
