A fire that broke out on Thursday in a lorry travelling along the Trans-European Motorway (TEM) near Bahçeşehir, west of Istanbul – the cause of which is still under investigation – forced the firefighters to intervene to bring the flames under control, causing chaos on the roads along this major transport route.
The fire broke out at around 16:30 local time (15:30 CET) yesterday on the TEM motorway, between Esenyurt and Bahçeşehir, according to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet. The flames, which arose for reasons as yet unknown from a heavy-duty articulated lorry travelling along the motorway, quickly grew in intensity.
After the emergency services were alerted by several witnesses, teams of firefighters and police arrived at the scene and began diverting traffic whilst the firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, which produced a thick plume of black smoke visible from several kilometres away.
At least four fire crews were called in to extinguish the flames, which at times reached a height of 8 metres. As a result of the fire, the TEM motorway had to be closed to traffic in the direction from Istanbul to Edirne, whilst the lorry in fire was completely burnt out and rendered unusable.
