A boy under the age of 14 who fired into the air with a Kalashnikov rifle outside a house in Sarıyer, in the north of Istanbul, in order to intimidate someone with whom he was in a dispute, was arrested by the police after being identified. Officers subsequently discovered that the suspect had hidden the weapon in an abandoned building.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, the incident took place yesterday evening at around 21:30 local time (20:30 CET) in the Çayırbaşı neighbourhood, situated on the European shore of the Bosphorus between the second and the third bridges. According to available reports, a minor identified by the initials K.D. went to the front of the home of a person with whom he had a personal dispute with the intention of intimidating him and fired several shots into the air with a Kalashnikov.
Following reports from several witnesses, officers from the Sarıyer Public Security Office attended the scene, where they found five empty cartridge cases on the ground and began investigating the incident by analysing footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
The officers determined that the person seen firing the shots in the footage was K.D., and proceeded to arrest him. It was also established that B.D., another 16-year-old, and D.Ç., also aged 16, were with him when the events took place. The moments when K.D. fired into the air with the Kalashnikov rifle in front of the house were recorded on a mobile phone and shared on social media.
The weapon was hidden in an abandoned building
During the investigation, officers located the firearm used in the incident inside a two-storey abandoned building. It was established that K.D. had cut a piece of foam from a sofa to hide the weapon – which was confiscated by the police – inside a dark blue bag.
Meanwhile, officers from the Motorised Police units of the Sarıyer Patrol Teams Command, who were on duty in the area, also arrested another individual identified as B.S. after observing his suspicious behaviour outside a local petrol station. During the search, the officers found an unlicensed handgun in his possession, and he was consequently also taken into police custody.
Finally, K.D., the minor arrested for firing a Kalashnikov in the street, was brought before a court in Istanbul on charges of breaching firearms legislation and “deliberately endangering public safety”. For his part, B.S. was brought before the court on charges of “breaching firearms legislation”. It has emerged that both K.D. and B.D. – one of the minors who was with him when he fired the shots – had several previous police records.
