At least two people were killed and two others injured during a fierce shooting that took place in the last few hours at a currency exchange office (döviz, in Turkish) located in the Fatih district next to the historic Grand Bazaar of Istanbul.
The incident took place at a döviz located within the Sofçuhan business centre, situated between the Istanbul Grand Bazaar and the Nuruosmaniye Mosque. According to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, an argument between a customer and the owner of the establishment escalated, leading to an exchange of gunfire that ended in tragedy.
A dispute over a debt sparked the tragedy
As a result of the shooting, two people lost their lives and two others were injured, although some media outlets initially reported that three people had died. According to initial reports, the clash appears to have stemmed from a dispute over a debt.
After receiving the report of the incident, medical and police personnel immediately rushed to the scene, and the injured were taken to hospital by medical teams. Following initial investigations, the Istanbul police arrested a suspect in connection with the shoot out. At present, there is no further information regarding the incident.
This is not the first shooting at a döviz in Istanbul
A döviz bürosu (currency exchange office) is an office in Turkey authorised to carry out currency exchange and cash transactions. In recent years, other attacks and shootings have been reported at such establishments in Istanbul.
Last January, another currency exchange office was shot at in Aksaray – also in the Fatih district of Istanbul – when a masked individual entered the premises and opened fire on an employee. In July last year, two men opened fire on a döviz in the Mesihpaşa neighbourhood, again in Fatih, although no one was injured. Both shootings were resolved with the arrest of several suspects.
