Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan left on Friday on the presidential plane for Germany to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on an official visit aimed at addressing political and economic relations between the two countries – Germany is Turkey’s main trading partner – and achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, an issue on which Ankara and Berlin have very different positions.
While Erdoğan has been increasingly critical of Israel and Western countries over the brutal offensive on Gaza, Scholz’s government has on several occasions expressed strong support for Israel, limiting itself to calling for minimising civilian casualties among Palestinians, where the death toll now exceeds 11,500, mostly women and children. The Turkish president, who recently referred to Germany as ‘the most powerful country in Europe‘, will also discuss with Scholz the resumption of negotiations on customs union with the EU or visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens; other issues such as Ankara’s purchase of 40 Eurofighter planes, immigration, or NATO enlargement, will also be on the agenda.
