Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe to decide the league in the derby

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe will decide who takes this season’s league title in Sunday’s derby between the two sides in Istanbul, after both Lions and Yellow Canaries managed to win comfortably in their respective matches this weekend.

Galatasaray beat Karagümrük at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul’s Fatih district, in a match they dominated but which went against them several times: first with the home side’s goal after 34 minutes through Ryan Mendes, and then in the second half when the Fatih side equalised with just 7 minutes to go thanks to a spectacular goal from Brazilian Marcão. Finally, just seconds before the end of the 90 minutes, Berkan Kutlu beat the defence to make it 2-3, sending his team-mates and the fans into euphoria, as the victory almost gave them a second consecutive championship title.

Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, were convincing winners at home to Kayserispor in a more evenly matched game in which the Anatolian side certainly deserved a goal, but which İsmail Kartal‘s side eventually settled with more pressure, more shots on the goal and more accuracy. Two goals from Batshuayi and Djiku in the first half, and another from Çağlar in the 59th minute, sealed the game.

With these results, Galatasaray maintains its lead over Fenerbahçe with only two games left in the season, meaning that Fenerbahçe needs to win and for Okan Buruk’s side to slip up to take the title from them, something that seems difficult given Galatasaray’s record so far. A win or a draw for Galatasaray in the derby between the two teams next Sunday would leave the Süper Lig in the bag, and Galatasaray could be crowned champion in their own stadium, while a win for Fener would give Kartal’s side a boost and leave everything to be decided if the Lions’ fail to beat Konyaspor on the final matchday, which seems unlikely. In short, things will have to get very complicated for Galatasaray not to win yet another Super League.
