A high-level delegation from Turkey has travelled to Kiev, Ukraine, to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries, as well as the participation of Turkish companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war.
According to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, the delegation travelling to the Ukrainian capital is headed by the Minister of Trade, Ömer Bolat, and the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumaklı, who during their visit are scheduled to meet with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tomorrow, Thursday, as well as with their counterparts in Ukraine. Both ministers are accompanied, as part of the delegation sent by Ankara, by representatives of 25 Turkish construction companies, according to an official statement published in the last few hours by the Turkish Trade Ministry.
During the visit to Kiev, the so-called Turkey-Ukraine Reconstruction Working Group, which was created last year in Istanbul as part of an agreement signed in 2022 between Erdoğan and Zelenskyy, is scheduled to meet for the first time. The group’s mission is to coordinate the reconstruction of socio-economically relevant facilities, including roads, bridges, water and electricity infrastructure, hospitals and schools. The meeting will be co-chaired by Ömer Bolat and Olekiy Kuleba, the Ukrainian Minister of Communications and Territorial Development.
The visit is highly significant in the growing cooperation between Turkey and Ukraine, and seeks to deepen projects aimed at rebuilding the country’s war-damaged infrastructure with the involvement of Turkish contractors. Turkish government sources point out that Turkey is also stepping up its diplomatic efforts to participate in the fund of 50 billion euros agreed by the EU at the end of January, aimed to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine.
During the conflict, Turkish construction companies have already carried out some 100 emergency projects in Ukraine valued at 1.2 billion euros for the reconstruction and repair of motorways, bridges, housing and energy installations. The portfolio of accumulated projects in the sector in Ukraine, estimated at 10 billion dollars, is expected to play a fundamental role in covering Kiev’s urgent needs in the post-war period.
