Turkey is still confident that an agreement can soon be reached to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, despite the tense press conference between Trump and Zelenskyy in the White House that ended without an agreement between Washington and Kiev, and the announcement by the US president that he will no longer provide support to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy himself said from London, after the summit in the UK, that the idea of a ceasefire without security guarantees for Ukraine ‘is not enough’ and will not serve to bring a lasting peace with Russia. ‘There are different countries with different ideas on this issue. But our priority is, as our president (Tayyip Erdoğan) has stated, that there should be no losers in the peace process,’ Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in statements reported by the Anatolia news agency.
‘Today’s summit was important. It was a summit attended by 17 countries, the European Union and Canada. The EU and NATO countries were present, all except the United States were here,‘ the Turkish foreign minister explained speaking about the meeting of heads of state convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which aimed to establish a common security strategy following the radical shift in Donald Trump’s new government’s policy towards Europe and Ukraine.
Fidan recalled that, throughout the conflict, Turkey had played a key mediation role between Ukraine and Russia, and insisted that Ankara remains willing to favour an agreement despite recognising that, during the London summit, the participating countries put forward different ideas on how to end the war: ‘Within the European Union, different perspectives have emerged in light of the position the United States has taken in recent weeks, and the increasingly evident clarity of that stance,’ he said.
It was precisely the moment of high tension that took place last Friday in the White House Oval Office between Zelenskyy, Trump and Vice-President Vance, which has made headlines around the world, that has put into question the role that the US president has sought to attribute to himself as the best mediator to achieve a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. For the Turkish foreign minister, the situation created by the arrival of Trump means that Europeans will convene security summits like the one in London more frequently: ‘It is obvious that the recent political positions of the United States, particularly on Ukraine and on the security of Europe, have raised many questions in the minds of European leaders.’
