The Turkish army launched on Sunday the operation “Bahar Kalkanı” (Spring Shield) in Syria in response to Assad’s brutal offensive in Idlib, which has caused a massive exodus of refugees and where 33 Turkish soldiers died in an attack by the Syrian regime. Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, who visited a military command centre on the border with Syria, said the operation aims to defend the security of Turkish forces in Idlib, protect the civilian population, curb the exodus of refugees to Turkey and prevent the emergence of radical groups in Syria.
