A pilot of a Turkish Airlines plane died in mid-air after losing consciousness while the aircraft was flying between Seattle (USA) and Istanbul, causing the plane to make an emergency landing in New York, piloted by the rest of the crew.
Turkish media reported that flight TK204 had taken off late on Tuesday from Seattle. According to details released by Yahya Üstün, a spokesman for the airline, the captain of the plane (an Airbus 350), 59-year-old İlçehin Pehlivan, fainted while the aircraft was still flying over US airspace.
‘After first aid was unsuccessful, another pilot and co-pilot of the crew decided to make an emergency landing, but our captain passed away before landing,’ Üstün said in a statement posted on social networking site X, noting that after landing in New York, the passengers continued on their planned route to Istanbul.
The deceased pilot had been working for Turkish Airlines since 2007 and had passed his last medical examination on 8 March at a centre authorised by the Civil Aviation General Directorate without any health problems being detected that prevented him from performing his job, added the airline spokesman, who also expressed his condolences to his colleagues, loved ones and the captain’s entire family.
