Two pilots were killed in Turkey when a private plane crashed during a training flight at Yenişehir airport, about 50 km east of the city of Bursa, in an accident that was recorded by security cameras and which experts attribute to a possible error by the co-pilot, a student at a private flight school.
According to Turkish news agencies, the accident occurred this morning at around 8:00 local time (7:00 CET) during a training session in which the aircraft was performing a ‘touch and go’ manoeuvre, in which the plane lands on the runway and takes off again without stopping the engines. As can be seen from nearby security camera footage, the aircraft – owned by the private aeronautical school Fenix – experienced problems on take-off from the runway and turned sharply and subsequently stalled.
According to experts, the instructor pilot allegedly handed over the controls to the student after take-off, at which point the plane lost control and turned sharply; during the emergency landing it then attempted, the left wing hit the runway and the aircraft overturned, sustaining serious damage.
Although several emergency crews – including fire brigades and ambulances – quickly rushed to the scene, they could only confirm the death of both pilots: 61-year-old instructor pilot Ünal Aster and his 42-year-old instructor candidate Emir Gülal Nalcı. The Bursa Governor’s Office has already announced the opening of an investigation to establish the exact causes of the accident.
Last month, two pilots suffered minor injuries when their plane made an emergency landing during a training flight in Çanakkale, northwest Turkey, in an accident attributed to engine failure. Earlier in June, the two pilots of a military aircraft were also killed when they crashed during a training flight in Turkey’s Kayseri province.
