Strong winds accompanied by heavy rains have today affected especially northwestern Turkey, including cities such as Istanbul and Bursa, where the storm has caused significant damage and several transport services have had to be cancelled, while the authorities have asked the population to avoid going out on the streets and take precautionary measures.
Turkish media reported that the winds, which came from the south and reached 80-90 km/h, forced the cancellation of numerous ferry services in Istanbul, both on connecting routes across the Bosphorus and on İDO and BUDO lines connecting to other cities and ports along the Marmara coast. There were no flight cancellations at either of the city’s two main airports, although there were complications with take-off and landing manoeuvres which caused numerous delays.
In Bursa, where wind gusts were around 70 km/h, there was also extensive damage and disruption to transport services, and municipal services had to carry out a large number of interventions to remove debris and trees that had fallen or been uprooted by the wind. The provincial governor’s office also issued emergency warnings urging citizens to exercise extreme caution.
Despite the strong winds, no injuries were reported in Istanbul or Bursa. The Turkish State Meteorological Service has asked residents in both provinces to avoid going outdoors as much as possible until weather conditions stabilise; however, the weather forecast predicts strong winds and even heavier torrential rains again on Saturday, with complications also expected in other regions such as the Aegean or Central Anatolia. In Antalya, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, the governor of Hulusi Şahin province also announced the suspension of school transport services due to bad weather.
