Antalya, in southern Turkey, experienced scenes of chaos and destruction late yesterday as a combination of torrential rains accompanied by hurricane-force winds and at least two tornadoes from the sea swept inland causing severe damage, especially in agricultural areas.
Heavy rains flooded streets and tunnels in several districts of the city of Antalya, which had already suffered floods in mid-February; the worst affected were the districts of Kepez and Konyaaltı, where many vehicles were trapped due to rising waters.
Authorities also reported that at least 6 people were injured by the passing tornadoes, which wreaked havoc on residential buildings, offices, and especially agricultural areas, where some 100 hectares of greenhouses were completely washed away in the Kumluca district, in the west of the province; here, one of the tornadoes crossed for 12 km inland, sweeping a swath 80 metres wide, leaving many farmers with nothing.
