Artificial Intelligence (AI) will begin to be used to perform some routine judicial tasks, including drafting texts for legal reasoning or preparing reports, the president of Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals (Yargıtay), Mehmet Akarca, has announced during the inauguration of the new judicial year in Turkey; Akarca explained that the high court has been using advances in technology for some time and, for example, has already created an AI-assisted virtual centre that is used to analyse case law and old sentences, which is very useful during litigation procedures and helps local courts to better interpret the law.
Akarca pointed out that, to ensure data confidentiality and avoid any security breaches, the AI operates exclusively through its own servers, and announced that there are already plans to apply Artificial Intelligence to draft court texts. “AI can be safely used in many areas of the courts, including for equitable workload distribution, case allocation, preliminary evaluations, and employee performance studies,” the high court president said.
