Turkish Airlines has confirmed that it is holding non-binding negotiations on possible investment opportunities that would include a stake in Spanish airline Air Europa.
According to media reports in Turkey, Turkey’s state-owned airline has reportedly issued a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange in response to media reports that Turkish Airlines (THY) is in negotiations to purchase shares in Air Europa Holding S.L.U., a company based in Mallorca, Spain. In the statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), THY stresses that it is continuously looking for investment opportunities to strengthen its position in the global aviation sector, and to this end is considering a possible investment in Air Europa as well as possible partnership strategies.
“Our company is continuously evaluating opportunities to strengthen its position in the global aviation industry and improve its competitiveness in the market,” the company statement said. The text adds that, in accordance with the decision of THY’s Board of Directors dated 29 May 2025, and due to the content of the aforementioned negotiations and the current uncertainties in the process, public disclosure of information that may affect investors’ decisions under the Capital Markets Board (CMB) Special Circumstances Notice has been postponed.
While indicating that the decision to postpone the publication of this information does not entail a risk of misleading investors, it is also emphasised that all necessary measures have been taken to protect the confidentiality of the information throughout the process. It is further added that the public will be informed in due course in case of any new developments that may affect investors’ decisions.
Turkish airlines will submit its bid in the coming weeks
Although the Turkish carrier has declined to disclose details of its talks with the Spanish airline, Turkish media reports claim that Turkish Airlines is considering for now buying a minority stake in the Spanish-based company if it finally becomes a shareholder in Air Europa. In any case, the final decision to be taken by THY will be known soon, as the Turkish airline is expected to submit its bid in the coming weeks.
Sources close to the process quoted by the Spanish press say that potential investors should have submitted their bids by the beginning of next month, although the process was delayed due to differences of opinion within Air Europa itself and uncertainties about the process. Air Europa’s objective with this sale process would be to repay government loans received during the coronavirus pandemic by the airline, which is also in talks with Air France and Lufthansa. A possible Turkish Airlines shareholding would, however mark, an unusual move by a non-EU carrier in the European commercial aviation industry.
