Arzu Sınıroğlu, who was considered to be Turkey’s oldest woman, has finally died at the age of 117 in a hospital in the central Turkish city of Kırıkkale, where she was being treated for health problems she had been suffering from in recent years.
Born on 1 July 1907, still under the Ottoman Empire, Sınıroğlu, who lived in the village of Elmalı, in a mountainous area of the Delice district, was popularly known by friends and neighbours as ‘Grandma Arzu’ and was noted for her healthy lifestyle and natural diet – to which she attributed her longevity – and her positive outlook on life, according to Turkish media reports; a mother of six children, despite her advanced age she led an active life and had even voted in the 2024 elections, never missing an opportunity whenever she could to express her support for the current Turkish president Tayyip Erdoğan, of whom she was an unconditional fan.
In 2020 she became infected with the coronavirus and contracted COVID-19, but surprised all doctors by recovering quickly and leaving the hospital a few days later. Despite her healthy lifestyle, in the last years of her life she had suffered health complications due to her advanced age, until a few days ago fell ill and she was admitted to the Yüksek İhtisas Hospital Centre in Kırıkkale, where she eventually passed away. The funeral for Arzu was held in her home village of Elmalı. May she rest in peace.
