Last December was the warmest month in half a century in Turkey, according to the latest data compiled by the Eurasian country’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change. Based on meteorological data, the average temperatures recorded last month were above average for this time of the year in most provinces of Turkey.
Thus, while the average for a December in Turkey between 1991 and 2020 was 4.8°C, the average temperature recorded in December 2023 was 8.3°C. Compared to the average temperatures recorded since 1971, December 2023 was the warmest month in the last 53 years. The lowest temperature recorded last month was set in the province of Van, where it reached -21.3°C, while the highest was reached in the province of Sinop, on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, at 27.4°C.
In the Marmara region, Turkey’s most populated region which includes Istanbul, December was also abnormally warm: while the average temperature over the last half century was 7°C, last month it reached 10.3°C, with temperatures as high as 25°C in Bursa province. Abnormally high temperatures were also recorded in other provinces of the country such as Manisa (24°C), Antalya (25.9°C) or Şırnak (22.5°C).
