Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan announced yesterday, during the inauguration of the largest solar power plant in Europe, the discovery of what he described as the largest oil reserve in Turkey’s history, located in the Cudi Gabar region, in the southeastern province of Şırnak. With a production capacity of 180,000 barrels per day (equivalent to 10% of Turkey’s annual crude consumption, with an estimated annual value of $2.9 billion), the field is located at a depth of 2,600 meters, and according to Erdoğan it is of such quality that “it has the potential to turn Turkey into an exporting country” of crude oil.
