Up to 3 earthquakes that reached magnitudes of 4.8, 4.5 and 4.2 on the Richter scale shook the province of Malatya, in the southeast of Turkey, yesterday afternoon, unleashing panic among the local population, which just 2 days before had already suffered another earthquake of magnitude 5.3 that left several injured and some damage. The first two earthquakes occurred at 4:39 p.m. local time (3:39 p.m. CET), just one minute apart and only 6.35 kilometers deep, according to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), causing great fear among citizens.
The third tremor occurred an hour later, according to authorities; all of them had their epicenter in the Yeşilyurt district, the same region that suffered the 5.3-magnitude earthquake 3 days ago, so the inhabitants of the area fear that these earthquakes could be a prelude to a bigger one. It must be remembered that Malatya was one of the provinces most affected by the 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes that devastated the entire southeast of Turkey last February, causing more than 50,000 dead.
