Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan reopened on Monday the old Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme tram line, which runs along the southern coast of Istanbul’s historic peninsula following the route – parallel to the sea – of the city’s ancient Byzantine walls, just over a month before the municipal elections in Turkey.
With a route of just over 8 kilometres, 8 stops in total and a journey time of about 20 minutes from start to finish, it is in fact an environmental project to modernise one of Turkey’s oldest trams, which also includes a pedestrian walkway along the coastline of Istanbul’s historic peninsula. The line connects the Sirkeci neighbourhood in Eminönü with Kazlıçeşme in the Zeytinburnu district, and entered into service 153 years ago but was closed in 2013 during the construction of the Marmaray underwater tunnel across the Bosphorus.
