The third underwater tunnel that will cross the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul linking Asia and Europe will be ready in 2028, the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Adil Karaismailoğlu, announced on Wednesday. The so-called “Great Istanbul Tunnel” (Büyük İstanbul Tüneli) will be located between the first and second bridge over the Bosphorus – between Eyüpsultan (Europe) and Ümraniye (Asia) – and will consist of 3 levels, two for vehicles and one for railway, with a new metro line with 13 stations. With capacity to transport 1.3 million people a day, it is the third underwater tunnel built in Istanbul under the Bosphorus, after the Marmaray and the Eurasia Tunnel.
