The heavy snowfall that is falling today on Istanbul and is expected to continue at least until Sunday is causing the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Istanbul Airport – located on the European side of the city – and at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, on the Asian side, which has led companies such as Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and Ajet to update the information on the list of flights cancelled due to the cold spell and snow that is affecting most of Turkey. According to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, the snowfall – which is expected to reach a depth of up to 40 cm in some areas of the city – has forced the cancellation, delay or modification of hundreds of flights at Istanbul Airport as well as at Sabiha Gökçen. Turkish Airlines cancelled flights
Likewise, Turkish Airlines (THY) issued a statement announcing the cancellation of numerous flights landing in or departing from Istanbul over the next few days, due to the restrictions announced by the Meteorological Emergency Commission (MADKOM).
“Dear Passengers, due to severe weather conditions in İstanbul, some of our flights from/to İstanbul Airport (IST) scheduled to operate on February 19 – 20 – 21 and 22, 2025 are canceled. To check the status of your flight and learn about your rights regarding your flights, please visit the flight status page,” Turkish Airlines said in a statement posted on its official website.
For their part, airport authorities also confirmed in a statement that ’due to the adverse weather conditions forecast at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, 15% of the remaining flights will be cancelled, in addition to the 10% cancellation of flights for 20 February, 15% of the remaining flights, in addition to the 15% cancellation of flights for 21 February, and 30% of the flights for 22 February’. Cancelled Pegasus and Ajet flights
The private airline Pegasus, based at Sabiha Gökçen, published an updated list of cancelled flights on its official website for Thursday 20th, Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February due to difficult weather conditions in Istanbul and following MADKOM’s instructions. The list, as of midday on 20 February, included a total of 458 Pegasus flights cancelled so far.
Similarly, Ajet, the low-cost subsidiary of Turkish Airlines, warned its passengers via its official website of the cancellation of numerous flights for 20, 21 and 22 February. In a message posted on the website, the low-cost airline ‘strongly recommends’ travellers to arrive at the airport ‘at least 3 hours before flight departure’ due to the problems caused by the snowstorm in Istanbul. For tickets purchased before 19/02/2025 for flights from 20 to 22 February, Ajet is offering reservation changes free of charge and refunds of unused tickets, partially o totally; in addition, the validity of the tickets can be extended until 22 March ‘without any fee or penalty’.
