The rising number of road traffic accidents, disputes amongst drivers and the authorities’ move towards harsher fines and legal penalties have caused a surge in demand for dash cams in Turkey, where an increasing number of drivers are installing these recording systems to document incidents on the road and protect themselves in legal proceedings and when making claims to insurance companies.
The increase in traffic fines and penalties for Turkish drivers, disputes over liability following accidents and other legal conflicts are leading more and more motorists to turn to in-car cameras. According to the Turkish newspaper Karar, these devices – regarded by legal experts as one of the most relevant pieces of evidence that can be presented in courts – are sold in Türkiye for between 2,000 and 20,000 Turkish liras (between 37 and 375 euros), depending on their technical specifications.
The recent change in the regulations, which imposes administrative and judicial penalties of up to 180,000 Turkish liras (3,360 euros) on those involved in road rage incidents, has become one of the main factors driving this trend. According to lawyers and legal experts quoted by the newspaper, “Recordings from cameras installed in vehicles have become the most important evidence in court”.
Not only are they accepted as solid evidence by the judicial system, but these images also significantly speed up the review of files by insurance companies and the verification of accident reports.
The main features every good car dash cam should have
Specialists in technology and car accessories highlight three essential functions that every dash cam should incorporate to provide maximum coverage in the event of any incident and avoid legal problems:
- G-sensor: automatically and securely saves the recording when it detects an impact on the vehicle or sudden braking.
- Loop recording: automatically overwrites the oldest videos to prevent the device from stopping recording due to a lack of storage space.
- Parking mode: automatically starts recording when it detects movement or a knock whilst the vehicle is parked.
In some European countries, certain insurance companies already offer discounts of between 10% and 20% on comprehensive policies if the driver uses a dash cam in their vehicle, due to its usefulness in the event of an accident, and similar measures are being considered in Turkey, where the authorities have increased fines to deter the most dangerous behaviour behind the wheel; in fact, just a month ago, a female driver was handed the highest traffic fine in Turkey’s history after being stopped by the police for failing to stop at a police checkpoint, driving under the influence of alcohol and with the music playing at high volume.
