Torrential rains accompanied by hail overnight on 30 April and in the early hours of May Day in Ankara caused severe floods and chaos in the Turkish capital, flooding streets and ground floors and even forcing the closure of several underground stations due to rising waters.
Turkish media reported that the city’s emergency services had to respond to hundreds of calls for flooding after the rainfall, which reached 70 litres/square metre in a few hours and overwhelmed municipal teams, while many citizens had to use their own means to clear the water accumulated in homes and commercial premises.
While no casualties or personal injuries were reported, Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin issued a public statement calling on residents of the Turkish capital to take precautions. Şahin said that after the torrential rains, emergency services received more than 1,300 calls for help due to the floods.
