Work began this week to transform the old Atatürk Airport into a big 5-square-kilometre public park, which will serve as a “green lung” for Istanbul as well as a safe place in the event of an earthquake, although it will retain a control tower and a runway for emergency landings. The opposition rejects the project alleging that the airport is a national value that should be preserved intact; but the government recalls that the old Atatürk Airport, currently used only for cargo planes and private jets, has lost its use since the modern Istanbul Airport opened in 2019 on the outskirts of the city.
