Turkey, bear cub abandoned to be raised in captivity

Bear cub abandoned by its mother to be raised in captivity

This few-week-old bear cub was found a month ago away from its mother in Hakkari, Southeastern Anatolia. Although for almost a week experts tried to find the mother, the efforts were unsuccessful and now the little bear is being raised at the Wildlife Protection and Recovery Center of the Yüzüncü Yıl University in Van, east Turkey. Professor Lokman Aslan explains that bear cubs learn from their mothers how to survive in the wild, so by being bred in captivity it can no longer be released into the wild, but instead a suitable environment should be created for it. “Just as children abandoned on the street are cared for by the State, we will take care of it,” says the professor.
