The city of Bursa sits on 11 active fault lines, according to a recent report issued by the Agency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) which analyzes the possible consequences for Turkey’s 4th largest city of a foreseeable major earthquake in the Marmara region. The report thus contradicts previous studies that indicated that Bursa was on only 6 active faults; it also warns that almost a third of the 650,000 buildings in this city of more than 3 million inhabitants are not resistant to earthquakes.
