A police officer died after being wounded in a shootout during an anti-drug operation early this morning in the Çekmeköy district, on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkish authorities said. The 27-year-old policeman was married and had started his career in the southeastern province of Hakkari, from where he was transferred to Istanbul in 2022.
According to various Turkish agencies and media, teams from the Istanbul Police Narcotics Department went to a house located on Adnan Kahveci Street in the Aydınlar neighbourhood at around 07:30 in the morning. During the intervention, the suspects opened fire from inside the building, and in the exchange of fire, special operations officer Emre Albayrak was seriously wounded and was taken to hospital, but died despite the efforts of doctors to save his life.
The gunman who shot and killed the officer, identified as 35-year-old R.A., was eventually shot dead by police during the shooting, while two other suspects, Ç.A. and C.A., were captured and detained. Turkish media reported that R.A., considered directly responsible for the shooting that killed Albayrak, had at least ten criminal records.
“Our police officer Emre Albayrak, who was seriously wounded in an anti-drug operation in the Çekmeköy district, could not be saved despite all interventions and became a martyr,” the Istanbul Governor’s Office confirmed in a statement. Following the operation, police cordoned off the area, cut off traffic on the street and deployed riot units in case of further incidents.
