Thousands of sheep staged an unusual scene in Hakkari, in southeastern Turkey, when the Turkish police had to escort 10,000 of these animals out of the city streets. Starting in May, shepherds from all over the region lead their herds to the Hakkari Mountains, at 3,500 metres of altitude, to avoid the high temperatures: it is a hard journey of hundreds of kilometres in which they have to cross the centre of the town. “We have had a very difficult journey; the police have escorted us through the city centre, God bless them all,” declared a shepherd who left Cizre (Şırnak) with his herds a month and a half ago.
