The Turkish government has announced that it will increase the price of plastic bags charged to customers in supermarkets, shops and other establishments, which will double its price with the arrival of the new year.
According to the Turkish news agency Anatolia, the new price has been set after a meeting held at the end of November with the participation of officials from the Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change and representatives of the involved sectors. During this meeting, the issue was raised that each plastic bag costs the seller more than 2 liras – including the production and recycling fee or GEKAP – from which 25 lira cents (kuruş) is recovered, since this is the price charged to each consumer.
The meeting concluded, however, that the price of 25 cents – which has remained unchanged for the last 6 years – per plastic bag does not currently deter consumers from using plastic bags; on the contrary, recent data has shown that the use of plastic bags is increasing.
Therefore, by ministerial decision, the price of plastic bags will be doubled to 50 lira cents in 2025, a decision that will come into effect from 1 January of the new year. This is the first increase in the cost of this type of bag since 2019, when on 1 January of that year a regulation came into force making mandatory to charge customers 0.25 liras for each unit: a measure that initially managed to reduce the use of plastic bags by 70%.
